Risilience is seeking to employ a physical climate risk modeller to join us in our mission to help businesses manage their exposure and response to the dual nature-climate crisis – the two biggest systemic threats facing the economy.

We have developed a unique modelling and analytics platform, founded on more than a decade of influential frameworks pioneered by Risilience’s founders at the Centre for Risk Studies at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. The outputs of our models help corporations assess and navigate the risks and opportunities presented by the transition to a low-carbon, nature-positive economy.

Our software platform along with our advisory services helps companies produce climate- and nature-related analytics to navigate their pathway to net zero and sustainable business practices.

Role Details

This role will be part of the environmental analytics team based in our Cambridge office. While we do support flexible/hybrid working and can look at applicants based outside the Cambridge area, the applicant will be expected to work from the Cambridge office most of the time.

In this role you will help us to develop and maintain our suite of environmental and risk models. This role will have a primary focus on physical climate risk modelling, including developing new models and methods to quantify climate-related perils and their impacts to business value chains. You will be a thought leader within the team and apply your existing knowledge across nature and climate to build the next generation of data driven models.

As a senior member of the modelling team, you will wrangle complex datasets, conduct analytics and build rigorous models to help quantify the probability, consequences and financial impacts of nature and climate risk scenarios. Your work will generate new insights through the visualization and representation of outputs to solve challenges related to the quantification of environmental risks to business. From time to time you will work directly with clients on consulting projects to develop robust modelling solutions that support real business concerns. You will present the methods and results of your cutting-edge modelling directly to clients.

You will be part of a talented team of modellers, economists, data scientists, and software engineers. You will also contribute to the development of the wider company and support Risilience on our mission to help our clients drive business transformation towards a sustainable future.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in natural sciences, mathematics, physics or a related quantitative discipline.
  • At least three years’ experience post-qualification.
  • Expertise in relevant physical scientific topics related to climate change, and/or catastrophe risk, or quantitative modelling
  • Familiarity with climate science and an ability to utilise or interpret the outputs of climate models and published datasets to produce customised analytics and models (e.g. IPCC and CMIP6).
  • Demonstrated experience with a programming language such as Python (preferred) or another language.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to learn new topics and develop innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience synthesizing information from a range of sources to create new knowledge or novel solutions; experience applying data science to real-world problems.
  • An ability to source information; organize and interpret datasets; and present and communicate results effectively.
  • An interest in climate change and/or nature risks and how these may impact business.

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of and/or expertise in relevant topics related to climate change and nature risk, such as physical risk science, risk analysis, mathematical modelling, engineering or statistics.
  • Experience using and interpreting geospatial data science and geographical information systems (GIS)
  • Relevant experience working in a commercial setting.
  • Business consultancy experience, and/or prior experience presenting to senior executives and associated business stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management with an ability to deliver projects on time and on budget.
